If you have scrolled a job board or a social feed lately, you have seen them: quiz sites that promise you can earn cash from home by answering questions on your phone. Most people assume they are all scams, and honestly, a lot of them are.
So we did the boring part. Over eight weeks, three of our editors signed up for 23 paid quiz and trivia platforms, answered rounds every evening, tracked each payout request and wrote down how long it took to arrive. Fourteen of those sites never paid a cent. Four paid, but at rates that were not worth the evening.
Five did pay properly. Below is how the model works, the five sites ranked from good to best, and what you should check before you give one of them your email address.
How quiz sites actually pay you (it is not a lottery)
Quiz platforms earn money from brands and sponsors who want people to look at their questions, products and ad placements. Your attention is the product. When you complete a round, the platform gets paid by the advertiser and passes a slice of that fee to you. There is nothing to invest, nothing to buy and no recruiting friends.
Pick a site with a published payout threshold. If you cannot find the minimum cash-out amount in plain numbers before signing up, walk away. Every site that paid us listed it openly.
Answer rounds in gaps you already have. Most rounds run 3 to 6 minutes. Two or three rounds with your morning coffee is a realistic routine.
Cash out the moment you pass the minimum. Verified sites pay by PayPal, bank transfer or gift card, usually in 2 to 7 days. Requesting early tells you fast whether a site is real.
The catch is that only a small group of platforms run this model properly. The rest are ad farms, or survey funnels that keep you one quiz away from a payout that never lands in your account.
The 5 quiz websites that paid us, ranked
Ranked by payout reliability first, hourly rate second, and ease of use third. The figures are what our testers actually received, not the marketing claims on each site's homepage.
1
QuizHive
Editor's pick
The site our whole test panel kept using after the test officially ended. Rounds are short (3 to 6 minutes), the cash-out minimum is the lowest we found at £5, and every withdrawal in our test landed within 72 hours. It runs in a phone browser, so there is no app to install and no storage to give up.
Verdict: the best place to start if you have never tried paid quizzes before. Lowest risk, fastest first payout.
Live trivia rooms run every 30 minutes from 6pm to midnight, and prizes are shared with the top 40% of players instead of only the winner. Payouts per game are smaller, but it was the site our testers opened without being reminded. Averaged across four weeks, we logged £3.10 per evening.
Best for: people who would rather play two quick games than grind through survey rounds.
3
BrainBounty
Highest rate
The best hourly rate we recorded, roughly £8.40 an hour, and the only site on the list where a tester cleared £100 inside two weeks. The catch is availability: signups open in waves and are limited to the US, UK, Canada and a handful of EU countries. Worth joining the waitlist if you qualify.
Best for: anyone in a supported country who can check back when new slots open.
The honest number: across all five sites, our testers averaged just under £4 an hour. It covers fuel or a grocery top-up, not a salary.
4
RewardQuiz
Fastest rewards
Cash withdrawals start at £20, which takes a while to reach. Gift cards, however, start at £5 and were delivered instantly in every one of our test redemptions. If you would happily turn points into supermarket or streaming credit, this is the quickest loop on the list.
Best for: gift card earners who want small, quick wins rather than cash in the bank.
5
SurveyLadder
Lowest effort
One question at a time, and you can pause mid-round and come back hours later, which makes it the easiest site to fold around a job or a school run. Rates are modest (£2.60 to £3.90 an hour), but it had a perfect payout record in our test: nine withdrawals, nine payments.
Best for: fitting 10 spare minutes into a day that has no room for anything else.
What separates the five that pay from the rest
A published cash-out threshold. All five list their minimum in plain numbers before you sign up. The fourteen that never paid us had a goal that moved every time we got close.
PayPal or bank transfer as an option. Gift-card-only sites are harder to hold accountable, and delays are far more common.
No deposit, ever. A paying quiz site takes a cut of advertiser money. The moment a site asks you to pay in or buy a level to unlock withdrawals, close the tab.
Realistic hourly rates. £2.50 to £9 an hour is the honest range for this work. Anyone promising £200 a day is selling you a course, not a quiz site.
Real people behind the support inbox. We emailed every platform a simple payout question. The five that replied within a day were also the five that paid.
“My sister sent me one of these links and I was sure it was a scam. I did 20 minutes a night for a month and pulled out £141. It is not rent money, but it paid for my fuel and it actually arrived.”
Marta L., 38, Manchester. Verified payout, October 2024.
Individual results vary by country, availability and how much time you put in. Testimonials describe specific experiences and are not a promise of income.
Paid quizzes are a real business model: brands pay platforms for engaged attention and platforms share a slice with users. The scam version asks you to deposit money, buy upgrades or recruit friends. None of the five sites we recommend does any of those things.
How much can I realistically earn?
Our testers made between £2.60 and £8.40 an hour, depending on the site and the time of day. Treat it as pocket money. The people who do best use it to replace idle scrolling, not as a second job.
How much time do I need before the first payout?
Most rounds take 3 to 6 minutes. With 15 to 20 minutes a day, our testers reached their first withdrawal in two to three weeks on the faster sites, and sooner on QuizHive because its minimum is only £5.
Do I have to be good at trivia?
No. Most rounds are opinion or consumer questions with no right answer. Live trivia is the exception, and even there prizes are shared with the top 40% of players.
What if a site stops paying?
Request a small withdrawal as soon as you pass the minimum instead of letting a balance build up. If a payment misses the 7 day mark, stop answering rounds and move to the next site on the list.
